Another Adventure (Robyn)

“Two drawing near,” Cedar announces. He uses one finger to hold the curtain open, body planted off to the side so he may peek unseen.

Two? I muse as those who remain seated rise as one. Aside from me, that is. From there every single witch whips out their wand, Athanasius’ staff appears out of thin air, and the shifters take a stance in that way they have when they are ready to transform and pounce. The demons merely wait for a command to attack. The gathering’s tension has escalated from nothing to a gazillion, and it radiates so heavily that even I can sense it. I wish I thought to bring my own wand downstairs now. As it is, I am left with my unreliable skills without the weapon, my own fear rising.

“I can’t imagine they would dare,” the man with the deep, natural voice comments. I note he is a tall, well-built man of color standing not far from the window. He is one of the witches.

A Thyme ancestor. He resembles Sam.

“It isn’t them,” Cedar continues. All have assumed Samantha and Leo, as have I. “It is an energy vampire and a wolf shifter. Neither are familiar.”

“Could be accomplices,” the woman with the Thyme man replies. Possibly his wife.

I, on the other hand, straighten at those descriptions. They are trivial details, but… An Energy vampire and a wolf shifter? I set my plate aside, placing it on the side table next to Hawthorne. What are the odds that happens often? Those two species pairing up willingly? Even as accomplices?

“They are drawing very near. Their fast pace is steady.”

“When you say energy vampire,” I venture to ask, my tension and fear slipping into heart-thudding anticipation, “do you mean full or half?”

Eyes direct my way as I watch Cedar’s back. Some of the witches are dropping their wands and relaxing, yet most of the gathering remains at the ready. Even Athanasius and Serina remain ready, although only partially.

Silence. Cedar adjusts his stance a bit, takes his hat off just to put it back on again. “I sensed energy first, except now I am registering human. He is half human. The shifter is an alpha.”

No way! That gets me to stand along with everyone else, heart pounding ferociously faster. To the point that I can hear it in my ears. I think I might be smiling.

“I am not sure if the alpha is trying or not, but he isn’t keeping up with the vampire’s speed. The vampire honestly appears to be putting much effort into his run while the alpha is just following along, hollering at him to stop.”

I attempt to smother my smile with a hand and discover I can’t. Seriously! No way! Although the human part is a dead giveaway, as is the alpha.

More wands drop, shifters begin to untense.

“Do you know them, Robyn?” Serina asks.

I start walking, trying to remain calm, and move through the living room for the hallway. I turn the few steps to the front door, hand trembling.
